اگر روی موتوری بیش از حد مجاز بار بیافتد، جریان زیادی از شبکه دریافت کرده و سیم پیچ هایش داغ می شود و در صورت عدم قطع به موقع، موتور خواهد سوخت
رله حرارتی موتور را در مقابل اضافه بار حفاظت می کند. رله اضافه بار جهت کنترل جریان موتورهای الکتریکی بکار می رود و یک نوع رله حفاظتی است این رله از دو فلز با جنس مختلف که ضرایب انبساط طولی مختلفی دارند تشکیل شده است. شرایط کار این رله ها از (۲۰-) تا (۶۰+) درجه سانتیگراد متغیر است.
